Magnetic ship's compass in a wooden box with lid. Writing on the compass: "Star, Boston, USA" and the number "39598". Compass works and appears to be in excellent condition.
Compass was owned by Clarence O. Dienst of Toledo, Ohio. Born July 14, 1895, died in 1970. Avid yachtsman and member of the Maumee River Yacht Club, became Commodore in 1942 and was named "Captain of the Port of Toledo". The compass was inherited and donated to MCHS by his granddaughter, along with the book "Instructions for the compensation of the Magnetic Compass" entered as accession number 2021.2769.2.
