Description: Head of steel 12 inches long, tapers fromj 2 1/2 down to 2 inches above the handle, then has a 3 1/2 inch hook on backside of head. 29 inch wooden handle curved slightly at end. Goes through the head. Marked on end of handle - Lumbering Museum - South -  
History: Used to take bark off of hemlock and tamarack trees. The bark was taken off and the tree was left standing. The bark was boiled down to make tannin, which was used for tanning leather to keep the leather soft.
