Description: 8-20-1970 Power house area-excavation 95' deep-800/1000' long, 40' roadway inside coffer dam tapers down at a 45 degree angle. the bottom will be 500' long by 100' wide, the lake level elevation is 581+3' above sea level. the 1969-70 lake level is the highest in eight years. shortly after this picture a severe SW storm filled part of the excavation covering some equipment. the piling used in the coffer dam is 35' long. the top coffer dam is 10' above lake level. 18 or 19' waves have been known to occur here. it took 3-3.5 months to build the coffer dam. the water tank system is used to pump out the constant water flow from wells, springs, and service runoff of the huge slope. 10 gallons are pumped into the wells to get 20 or 30 gallons out. the water is also purified before being pumped back into lake michigan - LPSC Box slide # 5-178
